Is solar really that feasible in Canada if we only have sun half the year?
Solar Energy in Canada: Debunking the Winter Myth
Many people are under the impression that solar energy is not practical in Canada, due to its long and harsh winters. However, this is a common misconception. Canada is actually an excellent place for solar energy. Consider Germany, which has a much more mature solar market, they produce a lot more solar energy than us Canadians, despite receiving less sun than Canada.
The truth is, snow accumulation on solar panels is not a significant issue. In fact, the snow usually melts fairly quickly. The panels generate heat and are usually a few degrees warmer than the air temperature, even on cloudy days. Additionally, modern solar panels are designed to be low maintenance and durable, able to withstand the harsh winter conditions.
The rate at which the snow melts off your panels does slightly depend on the angle of your panel or roof. However a study at Dalhousie University showed found that the effects of snowfall on solar panel production were negligble. In fact, they found that a solar panel produces less energy on a cloudy day than it does when partially covered by snow.
It is usually not recommended to get on top of your roof to remove snow from your panels as it will have negligible effects and may risk injury due to a fall or accidentally damaging a panel with a shovel.
Another important factor to consider is the amount of sunlight that Canada receives. Although the winter months are harsh, the summer months offer more than enough sun to make up for it. A qualified installer should accurately size your solar system so that you are overproducing and banking power in the summer months, which will help prepare you for the winter.
While many believe that winter in Canada does not make solar energy practical. It is actually a prime location for solar energy due to its sunny summers and the durability and low maintenance of modern solar panels. Don't let the winter myth hold you back from making the switch to a clean and renewable source of energy.
